Slightly Out of Tune (Desafinado)
“Desafinado” was written in 1959 by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Newton Mendonça, right when bossa nova was beginning to take shape in Rio. The title is usually rendered as “Off Key” or “Slightly Out of Tune,” and the lyric pushes back at the idea that the new style depended on unconventional singing or loose intonation. An English version by Jon Hendricks appeared a few years later, which helped carry the song into the American jazz scene. From the early 1960s onward, “Desafinado” turned up in many landmark recordings – most famously with João Gilberto, Stan Getz, and Charlie Byrd – and gradually became one of the best-known pieces in the early bossa nova repertoire. This performance uses the English lyric and is arranged for voice and acoustic guitar. #Desafinado #Jobim #BossaNova #BrazilianMusic #JasonPaul
