Lyricist: Irving Caesar
Irving Caesar (1895–1996) was an American lyricist whose career spanned more than seven decades, contributing words to some of the most popular songs of the early 20th century. Known for his sharp wit and ability to pair playful or romantic lyrics with unforgettable melodies, Caesar helped shape the sound of Broadway and Tin Pan Alley.
His most enduring success came in partnership with composer Vincent Youmans on the 1925 musical No, No, Nanette, which produced Tea for Two and I Want to Be Happy. Both songs became instant hits and remain among the best-loved entries in the Great American Songbook. Caesar also worked with George Gershwin, co-writing songs such as Swanee and Strike Up the Band, further cementing his place in American popular music history.
This archive gathers songs by Irving Caesar, featuring Jason Paul’s modern interpretations alongside historical background. Currently highlighted is Tea for Two, performed on the album Come Explore With Me, which presents a contemporary interpretation of this Jazz Age classic.
