Lyricist: Mitchell Parish

Mitchell Parish (1900–1993) was an American lyricist whose words helped define some of the most enduring standards in the Great American Songbook. Born in Lithuania and raised in the United States, Parish was known for his poetic imagery and ability to match intricate melodies with equally memorable lyrics.

One of his most famous collaborations was with Hoagy Carmichael on Stardust, originally composed in 1927 as an instrumental and later transformed into a timeless ballad when Parish added his evocative lyrics in 1929. He also worked with composers including Duke Ellington (Sophisticated Lady), Leroy Anderson (Sleigh Ride), and Benny Carter (Blue Star).

This archive gathers songs by Mitchell Parish, offering Jason Paul’s modern interpretations alongside historical context and public domain sheet music. Currently featured is Stardust, presented with its backstory, sheet music resources, and a new performance that connects past and present.

As more of Parish’s work enters the collection, this page will continue to highlight his lyrical artistry and the songs that have made his name synonymous with American popular music.
