Lyricist: Mort Dixon

Mort Dixon (1892–1956) was an American lyricist whose words shaped some of the most enduring songs of the Jazz Age and the early Great American Songbook. Known for his knack for memorable, singable lyrics, Dixon worked with leading composers of his time, including Ray Henderson, Harry Warren, and Allie Wrubel.

One of his best-known collaborations was with Ray Henderson on Bye Bye Blackbird (1926), a tune that quickly became a standard, recorded by generations of jazz and pop artists. Dixon also co-wrote I’m Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover, That Old Gang of Mine, and The Lady in Red, all of which became staples of the era’s popular repertoire.

This archive gathers songs by Mort Dixon, featuring Jason Paul’s modern interpretations alongside historical notes and public domain sheet music. Currently featured is Bye Bye Blackbird, presented with its backstory, downloadable sheet music, and a new performance that bridges the song’s Jazz Age origins with a contemporary sensibility.

As more of Dixon’s work enters the collection, this page will continue to highlight his lyrical contribution to American popular music, ensuring these songs remain accessible to musicians, historians, and fans alike.
