I Shall Be Released

I Shall Be Released was written by Bob Dylan in 1967 during the period surrounding the Basement Tapes sessions. Although Dylan’s own version circulated unofficially at first, the song became widely known through recordings by The Band, Joan Baez, and Nina Simone. The song moves between Gospel imagery, imprisonment, judgment, and redemption, while never fully explaining itself. Like many Dylan songs from this period, it feels both deeply personal and strangely universal at the same time. This performance is presented with voice and acoustic guitar.
