Yankee Doodle
“Yankee Doodle” is an 18th-century American tune with origins in both British military satire and early colonial folk song. The earliest references appear during the French and Indian War (1750s), when British troops used the melody to mock colonial militias. During the American Revolution, the song was adopted and repurposed by American soldiers, eventually becoming one of the best-known patriotic airs of the period. Dozens of verses circulated in the 18th and 19th centuries – often improvised, topical, or satirical – resulting in many variant texts. Traditional sources sometimes list 16 or more verses, depending on region and era. This performance includes three verses and a repeated chorus, following a common shortened form used in schoolbooks and song collections. The melody remains a familiar part of American musical history, appearing in military fife-and-drum books, early American tune collections, and later as a standard element of civic and educational repertoire. #Traditional #AmericanFolk #PatrioticSong #ColonialMusic #JasonPaul
